Big changes for all of us

We are in Denver and finally out of boxes. We have been here a little over a week. Those first few days were pretty rough, but things are better now that the house is pretty much in order. I think we may even have friends over this weekend for a cookout.

The kids are adjusting to life in the city fairly well. I can tell they miss the freedom they had in rural Virginia though. Yesterday Simon asked me if there was a "California" here. At the house in Charles City they had several areas in the woods behind the house named for places Justin and I have talked with them about. There was an "Alaska" a "California" and an "Africa" all in the woods. The hardest thing for them to understand is that they can't go outside when they want to. We have some swings in the front of the house and it kills them that they can't spend  the entire day out there. But, we do have parks, coffee shops and a library all within a 5 min. walk or bike ride.

Justin has re-started a family blog for us. He is a much better writer than I am. The address is http://www.justinandaya.blogspot.com

We found a house...

Justin and I got to Denver on Monday after a very long day of flying....never ever let them switch your flights around if you can help it. We spent all day Tuesday looking around in the neighborhoods we were interested in and found many houses for rent. Everybody in Denver is super nice and helpful.  We found a house in the Park Hill area. It is a four bedroom two bath house in a quiet neighborhood with lots of kids. There is a park really close and a nice deli/market. This isn't the neighborhood we were most interested in but we are still really excited about the house and think it will be great for the kidos. So when we get back it is time to pack. We have about ten days to get all of our stuff in boxes...oh my goodness!

Home sellers

We signed the papers yesterday. If the appraisal goes well then we will close on the 24th of May. The offer was quite a bit lower than our asking price, but we didn't think it would sell for that amount anyway. We have been looking at rental properties and are pretty excited that there are plenty available in our price range. We really want to live right near downtown...hopefully walking distance to many thing we want to do and to Justin's office. Now we just have to figure out how to get all of us and our stuff out to Denver.

We are planning a birthday party for Ella. Goodbyes are so difficult. This is the last time she will see most of these friends. She still gets teary when she thinks about her friends at our townhouse in Williamsburg. We have also decided to leave Aero with the woman we adopted him from. He is just not a good inside dog. He sheds terribly and has some annoying habits that I don't want to deal with. I feel incredibly guilty about this, but I think it is for the best. We are also getting rid of Ella's cat, Echo (oh my gosh, my kids are going to hate me after this move). The cat can't  be an inside cat. He is neutered but he still marks his territory. New state, new house, new friends, new dog, new cat....this is all good right. We are going to be okay, right?

We did have a birthday party for Oliver. It wasn't too big of a deal. Oliver was teething and Justin had a work crisis that he had to fix. We did end up having a pretty good dinner and cupcakes. I'll post the pictures on the flickr site soon.

Spring

We had baby turtles this morning. I really wanted to get a picture of them but Justin had the camera. Last fall we saw a turtle digging a hole in the backyard and we watched her all day. I have been wondering if we would be able to see the hatchlings emerge and feel so lucky that we did. They were so cute and tiny and the kids were so excited. Ella really wanted to keep them as pets, but I don't like keeping wild things as pets. I would love to be one of those families that has all kinds of strange pets like rabbits, turtles or snakes (well maybe not snakes) but I think we will probably only have cats or dogs.

On a sadder note. Kurt Vonnegut has died. If you have never read him you should. He is wonderful.
